Topsail Island in Winter: What's Open December to February
What's open on Topsail Island in winter: beaches, piers, restaurants, museums and day trips from December to February, plus weather and a heated pool.
· 5 min read

Topsail Island in winter is quiet, mild and mostly yours: from December to February the beaches, town parks and Seaview Pier stay open, while seasonal spots like the Missiles and More Museum close until spring. January averages highs around 55 degrees, so it's beach-walk weather rather than swim weather, unless you have a heated pool.
I'm Dipen, and I host Topsail Paradise, a house for up to 22 guests in North Topsail Beach, about a two-block walk from the beach. Winter is the season I get the most questions about, mostly some version of "Is anything open?" Here's what stays open, what closes, and how I'd spend a winter weekend or week on the island.
What is the weather like on Topsail Island in winter?
Cool, often sunny and changeable. Climate-Data.org lists these averages for North Topsail Beach:

What's open on Topsail Island in winter?
The essentials and the best parts of the island stay open:
- The beach. No crowds, no umbrellas, and long stretches to walk. The town's rule that gear left on the beach from 9 PM to 7 AM gets removed applies year-round.
- Town parks. North Topsail Beach's town parks are open 8 AM to dusk all year.
- Seaview Pier, about 3 miles from our house. Its site says the pier is open 24/7, though the pier restaurant is seasonal; last season it closed November 30 and reopened for weekends in late February.
- Restaurants. Beach Bums Pizzeria, Bar and Grill, 4021 Island Dr., lists itself as open every day, and Splash by the Sea at Villa Capriani lists daily hours. Most other restaurants shorten their winter hours, so call ahead.
- Groceries. The Food Lion in Sneads Ferry, about 7 miles away, lists hours of 6 AM to 11 PM daily.
Our things to do guide has a restaurant table with drive times from the house.
What closes on Topsail Island in winter?
- The Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach closes for the season. In 2026 it opened April 1 and closed for the season October 9, per its hours page. The 2027 schedule hadn't been posted when we wrote this.
- The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center offers guided tours by reservation only, on posted dates. In 2026 it listed no public tours in October and a handful of dates from late November into December. Check its tour page for the current list, since winter dates for 2027 and 2028 weren't posted yet.
- Seasonal restaurants and shops. Some close from late fall to spring and others cut days. A quick call saves a wasted drive.
Do you still pay for beach parking in winter?
At town lots, yes. The Town of North Topsail Beach enforces paid parking from 9 AM to 5 PM every day, year-round, through the SurfCAST by Otto app or the QR code on the lot signs. Onslow County's beach access sites 1, 2 and 4 have free parking all year, open 8 AM to 5 PM from November through March.
From our house, most guests simply walk the two blocks to the beach.
What can you do on Topsail Island in winter?
- Walk and beachcomb. Winter storms and wind stir up the shoreline, which makes it a good season for shells and the small black fossil shark teeth Topsail is known for. Leave live shells and live sand dollars where you find them.
- Fish. The pier and the surf stay open, and our fishing guide covers licenses and what's biting.
- Drive the 4x4 beach. The town's 4x4 area at the north end needs a pass year-round, and from October to March it's open 7 AM to 5 PM.
- Play golf. North Shore Country Club in Sneads Ferry is about 6 miles away; our golf and fishing guide covers tee times for a group.
- Swim at the house. On a sunny afternoon the heated pool is the best seat on the island.
What are the best winter day trips from Topsail Island?
- Battleship North Carolina, in Wilmington, about 50 miles south. Its FAQ page says it's open 365 days a year, 8 AM to 5 PM, and most of the tour is inside, so it's a good choice on a gray day.
- Carolina Museum of the Marine, in Jacksonville, about 27 miles away, roughly 40 minutes. It opened in June 2026 and its visit page lists hours of 9 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday through Sunday.
- Lejeune Memorial Gardens, next to the museum, is open around the clock and lit at night, per the City of Jacksonville.
