Things to do in North Topsail Beach for groups up to 22: quiet beaches, the town park, group-friendly restaurants, and what's open October to May.

Topsail Paradise, at the quiet north end of Topsail Island.

The best things to do in North Topsail Beach with a big group are simple: long walks on a quiet beach, kayaking from the town park on the sound side, fishing at Seaview Pier, one big seafood dinner out, and a grocery-and-shrimp run across the bridge to Sneads Ferry. North Topsail is the quiet end of Topsail Island, with no boardwalk and no strip of arcades. For a group, that's the point: everyone spreads out by day and comes back together for dinner.

I'm Dipen, your host at Topsail Paradise, a house for up to 22 overnight guests at the north end of North Topsail Beach. Below is how I'd plan a group trip here: the beach and parking rules that trip people up, the best sound-side spots, where to eat and shop for 22, and what's actually open from October through May, when the island is at its quietest. Drive times are approximate, measured from our house, and the facts link to their sources.

The beach with 10 to 22 people: walkovers, rules and safety

The north end of Topsail Island is mostly houses, not hotels, so even in summer the sand is roomy, and from October to May you can walk a long way and see only a handful of people. From Topsail Paradise it's about a two-block walk to the public walkovers, so most of the group never needs a car.

North Topsail Beach rules that matter for big groups

A few town rules that matter more with a big group, straight from the Town of North Topsail Beach beach rules:

  • Take your gear home every evening. Chairs, tents, and umbrellas left on the beach between 9 PM and 7 AM are treated as abandoned and removed.
  • No glass on the beach, ever. Adults may drink beer and unfortified wine on the public beach. Liquor isn't allowed in public without a state permit, and no alcohol is allowed at the Town Park or the county beach accesses.
  • Fill in big holes. Any hole deeper than 12 inches must be filled before you leave it and 30 minutes before sunset.
  • No fires on the beach. Only small gas grills are allowed; charcoal isn't. (Save the charcoal for the two grills at the house.)
  • Give sea turtle nests room. Set equipment at least 20 feet from any marked nest. Nesting season runs May 1 to October 31, so the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center asks everyone to keep the beach clean, dark, and flat: turn off outdoor lights and close the blinds at night.

North Topsail Beach with kids: lifeguards, rip currents and calm spots

No lifeguards are typically stationed on North Topsail Beach, so swimming is at your own risk; check with the town for the current season (WITN reported none in 2023). With kids in the group, pick a "water watcher" for each swim, check the day's rip current risk on the town's rip current page, and teach everyone the escape: if a current pulls you out, swim parallel to the beach, not against it. For the little ones, the tot lot at Richard C. Peters Town Park and the flat water on the sound side are the easy wins, and Seaview Pier makes a good first fishing trip because the pier's pass covers the fishing license.

North Topsail Beach parking: paid town lots and free county accesses

If some of your group stays elsewhere or wants a different stretch of sand, here's how parking works, per the town's Beach Access & Parking page and Onslow County's beach access page:

  • Town lots are paid, enforced 9 AM to 5 PM every day, year-round, through the SurfCAST by Otto app, a QR code on the signs, or by phone. Standard lots run $5 an hour or $25 a day, and the fine for not paying is $50. On-street parking isn't allowed.
  • Three county accesses are free year-round: Site #1 (sound side, restrooms and showers), Site #2 at 2950 Island Dr. (a big pavilion, restrooms, showers, and about 250 spaces), and Site #4 at 484 New River Inlet Rd. (an observation deck and restrooms, across from the Town Park). County access hours are 8 AM to 8 PM from April to October, and 8 AM to 5 PM from November to March.
  • Accessible beach access: County Sites #2 and #4 have ramps, and the town lends two beach wheelchairs and a beach walker through the police department (910-328-0042).

At our house, the easy answer is the golf cart, a $300-per-stay add-on when you book direct (free for military families booking direct). It seats 6, and its tags are registered to the house, so beach parking for the cart is free. Carts may only drive on roads posted 35 mph or slower, and never on the sand.

North Topsail Beach restaurants that work for big groups

North Topsail Beach has only a handful of restaurants, and they're casual. With 15 to 22 people, most groups do one or two dinners out and cook the rest at the house. Hours below are what each place posted as of October 2026. They change with the seasons, so call ahead with your headcount.

Restaurant Where From the house Good to know for groups
Splash by the Sea North Topsail Beach (Villa Capriani) 3 mi, 6 min Open daily, Sunday brunch 10 AM to 3 PM, parking across the street
Seaview Pier Restaurant North Topsail Beach (Seaview Pier) 3 mi, 6 min Seasonal casual grill. Closed in winter (Dec through late Feb last season), so call first
Beach Bums Pizzeria, Bar & Grill North Topsail Beach (Island Dr.) 6 mi, 11 min Open daily, breakfast Thursday to Sunday, pizzas to take back to the house
Daddy Mac's Beach Grille Surf City 13 mi, 25 min Oct to Mar: reservation requests for 7 or more. Summer: no reservations and no single party over 14, so a group of 22 splits in two
Riverview Café Sneads Ferry 12 mi, 22 min Call ahead with your headcount

Splash by the Sea at Villa Capriani

Splash by the Sea is inside the Villa Capriani complex at 790 New River Inlet Rd., about 3 miles from the house (roughly 6 minutes). It's open daily, with Sunday brunch from 10 AM to 3 PM, and its parking is across the street. (910) 328-3044.

Seaview Pier Restaurant

At the pier on Fishing Pier Lane, about 3 miles from the house (roughly 6 minutes), Seaview Pier Restaurant is a casual grill for breakfast, burgers and seafood plates, right where the anglers are. It's seasonal: in 2025 it closed for the season on November 30 and reopened for weekends in late February 2026, so plan on it being closed in winter and call (910) 328-3172 before you go. Fishing tips for the pier itself are in my North Topsail Beach fishing guide.

Beach Bums Pizzeria, Bar & Grill

Beach Bums is at 4021 Island Dr., about 6 miles from the house (roughly 11 minutes). It's open every day and serves breakfast Thursday through Sunday. Ordering a stack of pizzas to take back to the house is an easy way to feed a crowd. (910) 328-1044.

Nearby: Daddy Mac's in Surf City and Riverview Café in Sneads Ferry

  • Daddy Mac's Beach Grille, 108 North Shore Dr., Surf City, about 13 miles (roughly 25 minutes). The useful detail for groups: from October to March it takes reservation requests for parties of 7 or more through the form on its website. In summer it takes no reservations and can't seat a single party over 14, so a group of 22 has to split into two parties, each with its own wait time. Its fall hours are closed Mondays, lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and Sunday brunch.
  • Riverview Café, 119 Hall Point Rd. at Fulcher Landing in Sneads Ferry, bills itself as one of the oldest restaurants in Onslow County (Only in Onslow). It's about 12 miles from the house, roughly 22 minutes. Call (910) 327-2011 with your headcount before you go.

Dinner at the house: Sneads Ferry shrimp and two charcoal grills

The full kitchen, a big dining table with benches, a bar nook, a ground-floor freezer, and two charcoal grills make cooking for 22 easy. Pick up a few pounds of local shrimp at Mitchell Seafood in Sneads Ferry (details below) and you've got a shrimp boil for the whole group. A grill night on the deck is usually the best meal of the trip.

Deck at Topsail Paradise with two long outdoor dining tables and blue Adirondack chairs, set up for a group dinner
Grill night on the deck is usually the best meal of the trip.

The sound side: the town park, kayak launches and Permuda Island

Behind the island is Stump Sound, flat water with marsh, herons, and dolphins on a good day. It's the best place to split the group up: paddlers on the water, kids on a playground, everyone else on a dock with a coffee.

Richard C. Peters Town Park: kayak launch, pier, tot lot and courts

North Topsail Beach's main town park is Richard C. Peters Town Park, at 465 New River Inlet Rd. across from County Beach Access #4, about 4 miles from the house (roughly 8 minutes). It's open 8 AM to dusk year-round and has a kayak launch, a sound-side pier and gazebo, a nature trail, a tot lot, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, picnic shelters, and charcoal-ready grills (Town Parks). It's pay-to-park with only 23 spaces, so carpool or bring the golf cart. Alcohol isn't allowed in the park.

W. Rodney Knowles Park

At 3623 Island Dr., across from Beach Access #29, this smaller pay-to-park spot has a kayak launch, a sound-side observation deck, and a picnic shelter. It keeps the same 8 AM to dusk hours.

Permuda Island Reserve by kayak

This 1.5-mile island in Stump Sound is part of the N.C. Coastal Reserve. You can reach it only by shallow-draft boat, and the state suggests enjoying it from the water by kayak or paddleboard, since the island is thick with vegetation, snakes, and insects. Look for egrets, herons, oystercatchers, and the occasional river otter.

Don't tie up a kayak or boat at any town dock or pier; the town doesn't allow it for any length of time.

Fishing: Seaview Pier, surf fishing and the 4x4 beach

North Topsail is a fishing town, and fall and spring are the best seasons. In brief: Seaview Fishing Pier is about 3 miles from the house (roughly 6 minutes), the town's 4x4 driving area at Beach Access #3 is about 0.7 miles away and needs a pass, and anyone 16 or older needs a N.C. Coastal Recreational Fishing License to fish off the sand (the pier's pass covers you on the pier). Seasons, rules, and tips are all in my North Topsail Beach fishing guide.

Sneads Ferry, across the bridge: groceries, seafood markets and golf

The high-rise bridge at the north end of the island drops you into Sneads Ferry, a working shrimping town and the most useful place for a big group's errands.

  • Groceries. The Food Lion at 965 Old Folkstone Rd. is about 7 miles from the house (roughly 13 minutes), and its store page lists 6 AM to 11 PM daily. It's the one I'd use for the big first-night shop.
  • Local seafood. Sneads Ferry's seafood markets sit near the docks around Fulcher Landing and Wheeler Creek. Mitchell Seafood (235 Wheeler Creek Rd., about 12 miles or 20 minutes) sells local wild-caught shrimp processed on site. Call (910) 327-7741 for hours. Buy a few pounds, fire up both grills, and dinner for 22 is handled.
  • Golf. North Shore Country Club at 101 North Shore Dr. sits along the Intracoastal Waterway, about 6 miles from the house (roughly 10 minutes). Book tee times at 910-327-2410 or online. A house of 20 is five foursomes, and the mild spring and fall weather suits a golf trip.

Rainy days and day trips: sea turtle tours, museum, Wilmington

  • Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, 302 Tortuga Ln., Surf City, about 15 miles (roughly 29 minutes). Visits are reservation-only guided tours. In 2026 there are no public tours in October, and the posted tour dates are November 27 to 29, December 5, and December 12. Tickets are on the center's website, so reserve them when you book the house.
  • Missiles and More Museum, 720 Channel Blvd., Topsail Beach, about 19 miles (roughly 37 minutes), covers Operation Bumblebee, the island's missile-testing history, pirates, and more. It's seasonal: in 2026 it opened April 1 (Wednesday to Friday, 10 AM to 2 PM, then weekdays after Memorial Day) and closed for the season on October 9. Check the museum's hours page for the 2027 schedule.
  • Jacksonville and Camp Lejeune, about 27 miles (roughly 40 minutes), for big-box shopping or a movie. Military families, see our Veterans Day and military stays guide.
  • Wilmington, about 50 miles south, for the riverfront and the Battleship North Carolina when you want a full day off the island.

What's open in North Topsail Beach from October to May

This is the season I'd book. The beach is empty, the minimum stay drops to 3 nights from October through April (instead of a full week), and pool heat is free and self-serve.

Months What's happening Worth knowing
October Peak fall fishing and the mullet run. The Autumn with Topsail Festival runs Oct 16 to 18, 2026, in Topsail Beach No public sea turtle tours in Oct 2026. Missiles and More closed Oct 9. Sea turtle nesting season ends Oct 31
November Quiet beaches, good red drum and trout fishing, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving trips Turtle tours Nov 27 to 29. Plan Thanksgiving with our heated-pool Thanksgiving guide
December Holiday stays and shelling on an empty beach Turtle tours Dec 5 and 12. See our Christmas and New Year's guide
January and February The quietest months: long walks, inshore fishing, hot tubs every night County beach accesses are open 8 AM to 5 PM in the winter. Town parks are open 8 AM to dusk. Seaview Pier Restaurant is closed for the season (it reopened on weekends in late February in 2026)
March and April Spring wakes up: bluefish and Spanish mackerel, and golf season Missiles and More reopens in April (Wed to Fri in 2026). Stays still need just 3 nights through April
May Cobia and kings off the pier, beach weather returns Weekly Saturday-to-Saturday stays begin. Pool heat is free for check-ins through May 15

The pool heat is free for check-ins from October 1 to May 15. The heater is self-serve, so you turn it on yourself with the instructions in your guest guide, no request needed. Wind and weather affect the water temperature, and it's not spa-hot. The two hot tubs are always included.

Most of this guide works best from a house where everyone is under one roof. Here's what Topsail Paradise gives a big group:

Wooden bunk bed in one of the kids' bunk rooms at Topsail Paradise
Bunk rooms for the kids, so the whole family fits under one roof.
  • A private pool with a pool volleyball net, 2 hot tubs, and cornhole for the yard.
  • A kitchen built for a crowd: the full kitchen, a long dining table, a bar nook, two charcoal grills, a ground-floor freezer, and two washer and dryer sets.
  • Easy beach days: about a two-block walk to the beach, beach towels and beach gear on the ground floor, two outdoor showers out back, and two hoses out front for sandy gear.
  • A 6-passenger golf cart for gear runs, a $300-per-stay add-on when you book direct, with free beach parking on its house-registered tags. Military families booking direct get it free ($300 value). How the cart works.
  • An EV charger for the drive down.
  • Parking: about 8 cars fit in front of the house.
  • House rules: overnight guests only (no events or parties), no pets, check-in at 4 PM and checkout at 10 AM.

The house sits a short walk back from the beach rather than on it, which is why the walk, the cart, and the pool matter. More answers are on our FAQ page, and you can read what guests say.

Bring the whole group to the north end

Quiet sand, a calm sound for paddling, fresh shrimp across the bridge, and a pool and two hot tubs waiting at the end of the day. If you've been looking for one house that fits the whole family or the whole crew, especially for a fall, winter, or spring trip, we'd love to host you.

See you on the north end,
Dipen, your host at Topsail Paradise

Questions, answered

What is there to do in North Topsail Beach?

Start with the beach: wide, quiet sand for walking, shelling, swimming in season, surfing, and surf fishing. On the sound side, Richard C. Peters Town Park has a kayak launch, a sound-side pier, a nature trail, a tot lot, and volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts, and W. Rodney Knowles Park has a second kayak launch. Seaview Fishing Pier is in town, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center is in Surf City, and Sneads Ferry, across the bridge, has seafood markets and North Shore Country Club.

What are the best restaurants in North Topsail Beach for a big group?

North Topsail Beach itself has a few casual spots: Splash by the Sea inside Villa Capriani (open daily, with Sunday brunch), Seaview Pier Restaurant at the pier (a seasonal grill that closes for the winter), and Beach Bums Pizzeria on Island Drive, where a stack of pizzas to go feeds a crowd. For a sit-down dinner for 15 or more, call ahead with your headcount. Many groups of 20 eat out once or twice and cook the rest at the house.

Is North Topsail Beach good for families with kids?

Yes, if your family wants space and quiet more than a boardwalk. The north end of Topsail Island is mostly houses, the beach is uncrowded from fall to spring, and Richard C. Peters Town Park has a tot lot, a nature trail, and a kayak launch on calm sound water. No lifeguards are typically stationed on the beach, so watch swimmers closely and check the town's rip current risk. Topsail Paradise sleeps up to 22 overnight guests in 8 bedrooms, including bunk rooms for the kids.

Are there lifeguards at North Topsail Beach?

No lifeguards are typically stationed on North Topsail Beach, so plan on swimming at your own risk and check with the town for the current season. Before anyone swims, check the rip current risk on the Town of North Topsail Beach's rip current page. If a current pulls you out, swim parallel to the beach rather than straight in, and call 911 in an emergency. With a big group, assign an adult to watch the water at all times.

Is there a grocery store in North Topsail Beach?

For a full stock-up, cross the bridge. From Topsail Paradise, the Food Lion at 965 Old Folkstone Rd. in Sneads Ferry is about 7 miles, roughly a 13-minute drive, and its store page lists 6 AM to 11 PM daily. There's also a Food Lion in Surf City and a Harris Teeter in Hampstead (about 18 miles, roughly 33 minutes).

Is beach parking free in North Topsail Beach?

Town-controlled lots are paid, enforced 9 AM to 5 PM every day, year-round, through the SurfCAST by Otto app ($5 an hour or $25 a day for standard lots). Onslow County's three public beach accesses in North Topsail Beach (Sites #1, #2, and #4) have free parking year-round. At Topsail Paradise you can skip parking altogether: the beach is about a two-block walk, and the golf cart's house-registered tags mean free beach parking for the cart.

Can you drink alcohol on the beach at North Topsail Beach?

Adults of legal age may drink beer and unfortified wine on the public beach, but never from glass, since glass of any kind is banned on the beach. Liquor and fortified wine aren't allowed in public without a state permit, and no alcohol is allowed at the Town Park or the county beach accesses. Check the town's beach rules before you go.

What's open in North Topsail Beach in the winter and off-season?

The beach, the town parks (8 AM to dusk, year-round), Seaview Fishing Pier, the Food Lion in Sneads Ferry, and many restaurants stay open, though hours shorten, so call ahead. Some places close: Seaview Pier Restaurant is seasonal (in 2025 it closed for the season on November 30 and reopened for weekends in late February 2026), the Missiles and More Museum closed for 2026 on October 9, and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center offers reservation-only tours on set dates (Nov 27 to 29, Dec 5, and Dec 12 in 2026).

Can a big group get a restaurant reservation at Topsail?

Sometimes, especially off-season. Daddy Mac's Beach Grille in Surf City takes reservation requests from October to March for parties of 7 or more through a form on its website. In summer it takes no reservations and can't seat a single party over 14, so a group of 22 has to split into two parties. For anywhere else, call ahead with your headcount. Many groups of 20 do one dinner out and cook the rest at the house.

Is North Topsail Beach worth it, or is Surf City better?

It depends on the trip. Surf City, in the middle of the island, has more restaurants and shops, plus the Surf City Ocean Pier. North Topsail Beach, at the northern end, is quieter and more residential, with the town park, Seaview Pier, and the 4x4 beach near New River Inlet. If your group wants room to spread out and an uncrowded beach in the morning, North Topsail is worth it. Surf City is about a 25-minute drive from our house for a night out.
