Topsail Island Christmas: A Beach Holiday for Families of Up to 22

Plan a Topsail Island Christmas or New Year's for up to 22: free heated pool Oct 1 to May 15, 2 hot tubs, a walk to the beach, and 2026 holiday events.

Every year, someone in a big family asks the same question: what if we did Christmas somewhere different? Not a crowded living room with half the cousins on air mattresses, but a Topsail Island Christmas: one house with room for everyone, a walk to a quiet winter beach, and a warm pool waiting when you get back.

I'm Dipen, your host at Topsail Paradise. Here's how I'd plan Christmas at the beach in North Carolina, and New Year's too, for a family of up to 22, with honest details on pool heat, December weather, local events, and what's open.

Why Christmas at the beach works best in one big house

The holidays are about being under one roof. Topsail Paradise has 8 bedrooms and 6.5 baths and sleeps 22. The two master suites sleep 5 each, and the six other bedrooms sleep 2 each, so grandparents get their quiet, couples get a door that closes, and the kids still end up in a pile watching movies. You can see how the rooms fit together on the floor plan.

One family told us it "fit our family of 16+ comfortably." Another guest, who brought her extended family, wrote: "The middle floor made the perfect spot for gathering and sharing meals." That gathering space is where Christmas morning happens. You can read more guest reviews here.

A friendly house rule: Topsail Paradise is for overnight guests only, up to 22. We don't host events, parties, or outside guests. The holidays here are your family together, and that's exactly what the house is built for. If that sounds like your crew, see our holiday availability.

Christmas dinner for 22, without the stress

If you're the one cooking, here's your setup: a full kitchen, two outdoor charcoal grills, a ground-floor freezer for the extra turkey (or the fish someone insists on catching), and two washer/dryer sets for the tablecloths and the inevitable sandy socks.

One guest summed up why families come back: "We had a blast from the beach to the sound hanging around in the house and having dinner together."

My practical advice: plan to cook on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and do your big grocery shop when you arrive. I listed the nearby grocery stores in my Thanksgiving at Topsail guide. Restaurant and store hours change around the holidays, so call ahead before you count on anything being open on the 24th or 25th.

Is the pool heated in December? Yes, and it's free

This is the question I get most, so here are the real details:

  • Pool heat is free for stays from October 1 through May 15, so it covers both Christmas and New Year's. Many rentals charge a weekly fee for pool heat; ours doesn't.
  • It's self-serve. You turn the heater on yourself with the instructions in your guest guide. No request needed.
  • Weather and wind affect the water temperature. A calm, sunny afternoon feels very different from a gusty one.
  • It's not spa-hot. For that, we have two hot tubs.

One group "loved the option to heat the pool as we had some cooler days." A swim on Christmas afternoon, then a few minutes in the hot tub as the sun goes down, is my idea of a holiday tradition. More pool questions are answered on our FAQ page.

Beach Christmas family photos on Topsail Island

A family photo on the sand in December is one of the best parts of a beach Christmas. The light is soft, the beach is quiet, and everyone is already together. Two local photographers worth a look:

  • Beach Photo (Surf City). They specialize in children and families and photograph sessions across Topsail Island, including North Topsail Beach. In past seasons they've offered a handmade driftwood Christmas tree as a prop with fall family beach sessions, on request, and they've run holiday sessions with Santa in Wilmington. Ask what they're offering this year.
  • JW Portrait Studio (Holly Ridge). They photograph families on the beach in North Topsail Beach, Surf City, Topsail Beach, and nearby, including large extended family groups.

Book early, since holiday sessions fill up. If you set up your own small tree or props on the sand, bring everything back with you afterward. North Topsail Beach's town code regulates unattended beach equipment.

Bring your own tree: make it your holiday home

Make it your holiday home for the holidays. You're welcome to bring your own tree, lights, and decorations to make the house feel like your family's Christmas. Just please use freestanding pieces or removable hooks (no nails, tacks, or tape on walls), keep lights to indoor/outdoor-rated strands, and pack everything up before checkout.

Topsail Island Christmas events for 2026

The local holiday calendar is small and sweet. Here's what's posted so far:

  • Surf City Annual Tree Lighting: Saturday, November 21, 2026, 4 to 7 PM at Soundside Park, with live music and a kids' zone (event listing).
  • Topsail Beach Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting: listed for Saturday, November 28, 2026, with the tree lighting right after the parade (Topsail Realty events). Check the Town of Topsail Beach events page for the start time.
  • Greater Topsail Area Christmas Market and Flotilla: Saturday, December 5, 2026, at Soundside Park in Surf City. The market opens at 11 AM, and decorated boats are expected around 6 PM, weather permitting (Chamber listing).
  • Sea turtle hospital tours: The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center lists guided tours on Saturday, December 5 and Saturday, December 12. Reservations are required and slots are limited to 15 tickets, so a big group should email the center first (visit page).
  • Christmas in the Ferry (Sneads Ferry): a tree lighting and breakfast with Santa weekend. 2026 dates aren't posted yet, so check the event site.

What's open on Topsail Island in winter

Winter on Topsail is quiet, and some places scale back. A few honest notes:

  • Restaurants: Beach Bums on Island Drive in North Topsail Beach says it's open seven days a week, and Splash by the Sea at Villa Capriani posts daily hours. Holiday hours can differ, so call first.
  • Piers: Seaview Pier in North Topsail Beach is the closest. Off-season hours change, so call (910) 328-3172 before you head over. The Jolly Roger Pier is at the south end in Topsail Beach.
  • Missiles and More Museum: closed for the season in winter.
  • The beach: always open, and nearly empty. Walk it on Christmas morning.

For getting around, our 6-passenger golf cart rental is $300 for the stay. Its tags are registered to the house, so beach parking for the cart is free. Drivers need a valid license, and the cart is for roads posted 35 mph or below. Bundle up and take it out for sunset.

Topsail Island weather in December

I won't promise you shorts weather. Long-term averages for North Topsail Beach show December highs in the upper 50s and lows in the mid 40s, getting a bit cooler toward the end of the month (climate data). The ocean is too chilly for most swimmers. Pack layers, a windbreaker, and swimsuits for the heated pool and hot tubs.

The sun sets early, which means the decks get their best show before dinner. Watching the sky go pink over the marsh and sound is a lovely way to end a holiday day.

New Year's at the beach in NC, together under one roof

New Year's at the beach house is about your family staying in together: a big dinner, board games at the long table, a soak in the hot tub, and the countdown on TV. With 1 Gbps WiFi, streaming the ball drop for the kids is easy.

On New Year's Day, take a walk on the beach or, if you're brave, join a polar plunge. The Dolphin Dip in Surf City is a New Year's Day tradition where a crowd runs into the Atlantic at noon at the Roland Avenue beach access (Dolphin Dip details). Closer to us, the Shrimp Dip is a New Year's Day plunge at Beach Access #31 on Island Drive in North Topsail Beach, hosted by the Rotary Club of Sneads Ferry. Check 2027 details for both before you go.

A guest called the house a "Quiet and peaceful location," and that's what a family New Year's here feels like.

Planning a Christmas vacation rental in North Topsail Beach

  • Minimum stay: 3 nights outside May through September.
  • Times: check-in 4 PM, checkout 10 AM.
  • No pets, please.
  • Pool heat is self-serve. Your guest guide shows how to turn it on.
  • EV drivers: there's a Level 2 charger on site, plus driveway parking.
  • Book early. Houses that sleep 22 are rare, and holiday weeks go first.

Questions, answered

Is Topsail Island good at Christmas?

Yes, if you want a quiet beach and lots of family time. December brings mild, cool weather, nearly empty beaches, and a small holiday calendar with tree lightings, a Christmas parade in Topsail Beach, and a lighted boat flotilla in Surf City. The ocean is too cold for most swimmers, so a heated pool and hot tubs make a big difference.

Is there a Christmas parade on Topsail Island?

Yes. The Topsail Beach Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting is listed for Saturday, November 28, 2026. Surf City lights its tree on Saturday, November 21, 2026, and the Greater Topsail Area Christmas Market and Flotilla is Saturday, December 5, 2026, at Soundside Park in Surf City. Confirm times on each organizer's site.

Is the ocean warm enough to swim on Topsail Island in December?

Not for most people. December ocean temperatures off North Topsail Beach run roughly from the mid 50s to about 60 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the source. Holiday guests at our house use the heated pool and two hot tubs instead.

Is the pool at Topsail Paradise heated in December?

Yes. Pool heat is free for stays from October 1 through May 15, and the heater is self-serve, so no request is needed. You turn it on yourself with the instructions in your guest guide. Weather and wind affect the water temperature, and it is not spa-hot. The two hot tubs are there for that.

What is open on Topsail Island in winter?

The beach is always open, and some year-round restaurants stay open, such as Beach Bums in North Topsail Beach. Others cut back or close for the season, like the Missiles and More Museum. Call ahead around the holidays, and plan to cook at the house on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

How many people can stay at Topsail Paradise for the holidays?

Up to 22 overnight guests. The house has 8 bedrooms and 6.5 baths: two master suites sleep 5 each and six bedrooms sleep 2 each. We do not allow events, parties, or outside guests.

Can we bring our own Christmas tree and decorations?

Yes. Bring a tree, lights, and decorations to make the house feel like your family's Christmas. Please use freestanding pieces or removable hooks (no nails, tacks, or tape on walls), use indoor/outdoor-rated light strands, and pack everything up before checkout.

What is there to do on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day on Topsail Island?

At our house, New Year's Eve is the family staying in together: a big dinner, games, the hot tub, and the countdown on TV. On New Year's Day, two local polar plunges are long-running traditions: the Dolphin Dip in Surf City and the Shrimp Dip in North Topsail Beach. Check each one's 2027 details before you go.
