Rainy Day Things to Do on Topsail Island
Rainy day things to do on Topsail Island: the Missiles and More Museum, the sea turtle hospital, the Battleship and indoor ideas for a big group.
· 5 min read

The best rainy day things to do on Topsail Island are the Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach when it's in season, a guided tour of the sea turtle hospital in Surf City, and a short drive to the Battleship North Carolina or the Carolina Museum of the Marine, which are both mostly indoors. Check hours first, because several island spots are seasonal.
I'm Dipen, and I host Topsail Paradise, a house for up to 22 guests in North Topsail Beach, about a two-block walk from the beach. Coastal weather changes fast, and a gray day with a big group can feel long if nobody has a plan. Here's my list, with drive times from our house and the seasons each place keeps.
What is the Missiles and More Museum on Topsail Island?
The Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach tells the story of the island itself. It's best known for Operation Bumblebee, which the museum describes as the U.S. Navy's secret guided missile testing program on Topsail Island from 1946 to 1948. Other exhibits cover Camp Davis, the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II, the Osprey aircraft, how the barrier island formed, and pirates including Blackbeard.
It's a good fit for a mixed group: history for the grandparents and rockets and pirates for the kids.
When is the Missiles and More Museum open?
The museum is seasonal, so check before you drive down. In 2026, per its hours page:
- Opened April 1, with hours of 10 AM to 2 PM, Wednesday through Friday.
- After Memorial Day, hours ran Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 2 PM.
- Closed for the season on October 9.
The 2027 schedule hadn't been posted when we wrote this. From our house it's about 19 miles, roughly 37 minutes, at the south end of the island.
Can you tour the sea turtle hospital on a rainy day?
Yes, if your trip lines up with its posted tour dates. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, 302 Tortuga Lane in Surf City, offers guided tours only, and reservations are required. A few things to know:
- Tickets are limited per time slot, and they go fast.
- No public tours in October. In 2026 the center listed a handful of late November and December dates.
- Big groups should email tickets@seaturtlehospital.org before buying, rather than trying to book a block online.
It's about 15 miles from our house, roughly 30 minutes. Our sea turtle season guide has more on the center and on nesting season, and our Surf City day trip guide pairs the tour with lunch nearby.
What rainy day trips are worth the drive?
When the rain is set in for the day, these two are worth the drive:
- Battleship North Carolina, Wilmington. About 50 miles south, roughly 75 minutes. The Battleship's FAQ page says it's open 365 days a year, 8 AM to 5 PM, that most of the tour is inside the ship, and that visitors should allow at least 2 hours. Walk-up tickets are sold from 8 AM to 4 PM. The tour covers nine levels, so it's a lot of stairs.
- Carolina Museum of the Marine, Jacksonville. About 27 miles, roughly 40 minutes. It opened in June 2026, and its visit page lists hours of 9 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday through Sunday, with free parking and a café. It's closed Mondays.
What can younger kids do on a rainy day?
- The Environmental Education Center in Sneads Ferry, about 7 miles away, shares a building with the Sneads Ferry library. Onslow County's tourism site, Only in Onslow, says its exhibit includes a black bear, a bobcat and a 12-foot alligator. Call (910) 324-5008 for hours.
- Zing Zumm Children's Museum in Jacksonville is listed by Visit Jacksonville as an interactive museum for younger children. Check its hours before you go.
- Shark tooth hunting after the storm. Once the rain passes, the beach right after a blow is one of the best times to find teeth and shells.
How do you make a rainy day fun at the house?
Some of the best days of a trip happen when nobody leaves. A few ideas that work well with a big group:
- Cook something big. The full kitchen and the 2 charcoal grills (for when the rain lets up) make a long, slow lunch easy, with seating for about 10 to 12 at the table and counter.
- Spread out. The second floor has the kitchen, dining area and a large open family room. With 8 bedrooms, anyone who wants a nap or a quiet hour can find one.
- Bring games and a puzzle. A tournament across generations fills an afternoon.
- Soak between showers. The 2 hot tubs on the first-floor wraparound deck are great on a cool, gray day. From October 1 to May 15 the pool heat is free and self-serve, warm but not spa-hot. Get out of the water if there's thunder or lightning.
The bedroom layout shows how the floors are set up.
When is rain most likely on Topsail Island?
Rain falls in every season here, so it's worth having a plan for any trip. July, August and September are usually the wettest months, mostly from short afternoon thunderstorms, and hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Our weather by month guide has the month-by-month picture.
Where should a big group stay on Topsail Island?
Topsail Paradise in North Topsail Beach sleeps 22 overnight guests in 8 bedrooms and 6.5 baths, with a private saltwater pool and 2 hot tubs. Minimum stays are 3 nights from October through April and 7 nights from May through September. An optional 6-seat golf cart add-on is available (see the golf cart page for pricing), and military families who book direct get the cart free. No pets, please.

Rain or shine, I hope it's a great trip.
