Topsail Paradise in North Topsail Beach, about a two-block walk from the nesting beach

Sea turtle season on Topsail Island runs from mid-May through August, when loggerheads come ashore at night to nest, and eggs incubate for about 60 days before the hatchlings race to the sea. The best way to see turtles up close is a guided tour of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Surf City, which is reservation only and often sells out.

I'm Dipen, and I host Topsail Paradise, a North Topsail Beach house for up to 22 guests about a two-block walk from the beach. Sea turtles are one of the things kids remember most about a week here, so I put together the guide I'd want as a parent planning a summer trip.

When is sea turtle nesting season on Topsail Island?

According to the Town of North Topsail Beach, nesting season along the North Carolina coast runs from mid-May through August. Topsail Island is one of the most northern places in the world where loggerheads nest every year, and the Town notes that North Topsail Beach has historically led the island's towns in nests and hatchlings.

A female loggerhead nests 3 to 5 times in a season and lays an average of about 120 eggs each time. The eggs incubate for about 60 days, so nests laid in late May and June usually hatch in mid to late summer. The number of nests changes a lot from year to year.

What happens on the beach during nesting season?

Every morning during the season, volunteers with the Topsail Turtle Project walk more than 20 miles of the island's coastline looking for fresh tracks and new nests. If you're out for an early walk, you may see them at work, or spot a marked nest near the dunes. Give it plenty of room.

Town rules protect the nests: all beach equipment must be at least 20 feet from a marked nest, and nothing may be placed directly between a nest and the ocean within 10 feet to either side. The full list is on the Town's beach rules page.

How do you visit the Topsail turtle hospital?

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is at 302 Tortuga Lane on the mainland side of Surf City. It's run by volunteers and cares for sick and injured sea turtles until they can return to the ocean.

What to know before you go:

  • Reservations are required. The center offers guided tours only, booked online.
  • Tickets are limited to 15 per time slot, and most days sell out. Book as soon as you know your dates.
  • Big groups should email first. The center asks large groups to email tickets@seaturtlehospital.org to discuss options. With 22 people, that's you.
  • There are no public tours in October.
  • No pets inside, and children 12 and under must be with an adult.
  • Admission as of late 2026 was $7 for ages 13 to 61, $6 for military and seniors, $5 for kids 3 to 12, and free for ages 0 to 2, plus tax and a small ticket fee. Check the site for 2027 prices.

The number of turtle patients changes through the year, and the center points out that fewer patients is good news. If there aren't many to see, it's a great chance to ask the volunteer guides questions.

What are the Turtle Talks at North Topsail Beach?

The Town hosts free weekly Turtle Talks at Town Hall on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 AM, from the first week of June through the last week of August. They're open to residents and visitors of all ages, and they're an easy morning outing before the beach. Check the Town's sea turtles page for the 2027 schedule.

How can our family help sea turtles during our stay?

These come straight from the Town's guidance, and they're easy for kids to own:

  • Lights off after dark. Hatchlings follow the brightest light, which should be moonlight on the water. Turn off porch and deck lights that shine toward the beach.
  • Red light only on the beach at night. White flashlights and phone lights confuse turtles.
  • Leave the beach flat and clean. Fill holes, flatten sandcastles and take chairs, tents, umbrellas and games home every evening.
  • Watch from a distance. Touching a nest or a hatchling is against federal law, even if it seems to be struggling.
  • Report problems. For an injured or dead turtle, call the Topsail Turtle Project at 910-470-2880 any time.

When is the best time to plan a turtle-focused trip?

June through August lines up nesting season, Turtle Talks and hospital tours, and it's also when the ocean is warmest. Summer stays at Topsail Paradise run by the week, Saturday to Saturday preferred, and our summer weeks guide explains how that works for big groups. If you'd rather come in spring, check the hospital's website for posted tour dates (there are no public tours in October), and our spring break guide covers March and April.

For more ideas while you're here, see things to do in North Topsail Beach, and for the summer holiday week, our Fourth of July guide.

Where can a big group stay for turtle season?

Topsail Paradise sleeps 22 in 8 bedrooms with 6.5 baths, including two master suites with kids lofts and a bunk room. It has a private pool, 2 hot tubs and 2 outdoor showers for rinsing off sandy feet, and the beach is about a two-block walk. See the layout, then check open weeks on our booking page. Booking direct on our site saves 15%.
