Yes, you can spend a winter month at North Topsail Beach: from October through April our house has a 3-night minimum, you can book up to 28 nights online, and longer stays start with a note through our contact page. Winters here are mild, with January highs around 55 degrees, and pool heat is free and self-serve all winter.
I'm Dipen, and I host Topsail Paradise, a house for up to 22 guests in North Topsail Beach, about a two-block walk from the beach. Every year a few families ask about trading a northern winter for a few weeks on the North Carolina coast. Here's an honest guide to how a long winter stay works at our house, what the weather is really like, and what stays open.
How long can you stay at Topsail Paradise in winter?
From October through April the minimum stay is 3 nights, and check-in days are more flexible than in summer. Our booking page takes stays of up to 28 nights. If you'd like to stay longer than that, contact us with your dates and we'll talk through what works.
Check-in is 4 PM and checkout is 10 AM. I don't publish monthly prices, because the total depends on your dates. The live calendar shows the full price, including the cleaning fee and tax, before you pay anything.
Who is a winter long stay at our house best for?
I'll be straight with you: Topsail Paradise is a big house. It sleeps 22 in 8 bedrooms and 6.5 baths, with beds only and no sofa beds. That makes it a great fit for a shared snowbird stay and a poor value for one couple alone.
The groups it suits best:
- Two or three retired couples splitting a few winter weeks, each with a private bedroom and bath.
- Grandparents with family rotating in. Kids and grandkids come down for a long weekend, and there's a bed for everyone.
- Siblings and their families who want a long stretch together without hotel rooms.
- Several households working remotely, which our remote work guide covers in more detail.
The bedroom layout shows how the rooms split across the floors. The house is for overnight guests only, and pets aren't allowed.
What is the winter weather like at North Topsail Beach?
Mild, with real variety from one day to the next. Climate-Data.org lists these averages for North Topsail Beach:
| Month | Avg high (°F) | Avg low (°F) | Ocean (°F) |
|---|---|---|---|
| December | 58 | 45 | 62 |
| January | 55 | 41 | 59 |
| February | 57 | 43 | 57 |
| March | 62 | 48 | 58 |
The same source lists about 6.5 to 7 hours of sunshine a day in December and January. That's beach-walk weather, not swimsuit weather, at least in the ocean. Our weather by month guide has the full year.
Is the pool heated in winter?
Yes. Pool heat is free and self-serve from October 1 through May 15, so you turn it on yourself. It's warm but not spa-hot, since cold nights and wind pull heat out of the water. On the coldest evenings, the 2 hot tubs on the first-floor wraparound deck are the better bet.
What does a winter day at North Topsail look like?
Slow, in the best way. Here's how a typical day might go:
- Morning: coffee in the bar nook, then a walk on the beach. In winter you'll often have long stretches of sand to yourself.
- Midday: a swim in the heated pool on a sunny afternoon, or a round at North Shore Country Club in Sneads Ferry, about 6 miles away.
- Afternoon: fishing at Seaview Pier, which says on its site that it's open 24/7, or a drive to Jacksonville for errands and the Carolina Museum of the Marine, open Tuesday through Sunday.
- Evening: dinner from the full kitchen or one of the 2 charcoal grills, then the hot tubs.
Winter is also good beachcombing season. Storms and winter wind stir up the shoreline, so it's a fine time to look for shells along the waterline.
What's open nearby for a long winter stay?
The everyday things you'll need are close:
- Groceries: Food Lion, 965 Old Folkstone Rd. in Sneads Ferry, about 7 miles away, roughly 13 minutes. Its store page lists hours of 6 AM to 11 PM daily.
- Fresh seafood: Mitchell Seafood in Sneads Ferry. Call (910) 327-7741 for winter hours.
- Bigger shopping: Jacksonville is about 27 miles away, roughly 40 minutes.
- Airports: Albert J. Ellis Airport near Jacksonville is about 37 miles away, and Wilmington International is about 49 miles, roughly an hour and 20 minutes.
Some seasonal restaurants and attractions close or cut back their hours from late fall through February. The Missiles and More Museum in Topsail Beach, for one, closes for the season each fall. Call ahead before you drive anywhere special.
What makes the house work for weeks at a time?
The everyday details matter more after the first week:
- Laundry: 2 washers and 2 dryers.
- EV charging: a Level 2 charger on the property.
- Internet: 1 Gbps Wi-Fi. We share how to connect after your booking is confirmed.
- Kitchen: a full kitchen, a ground-floor freezer and seating for about 10 to 12.
- Getting around: an outside elevator from the ground floor to the first and second floors, a driveway for 6 to 8 cars, and an optional 6-seat golf cart add-on for short trips (see the golf cart page for pricing). Military families who book direct get the cart free.
What should you know before booking a long stay?
- Cancellation: cancel 60 or more days before arrival for a full refund; 30 to 59 days out, half the rent is refunded; inside 30 days, the rent is kept. The full policy is on the booking page.
- Spring stays: if your stay runs into May, note that from May 1 the minimum becomes 7 nights, and pool heat stays free through May 15.
- Holidays: if your stay starts in December, our Christmas and New Year's guide covers the holiday weeks.
When you're ready, check the live calendar on our booking page. Booking direct saves 15%.
I hope you'll trade a few weeks of snow shovels for beach walks with us.
