Fall at Topsail Island: September and October for Groups
Fall at Topsail Island for big groups: September and October weather, free pool heat from Oct 1, fall fishing, local festivals and 3-night stays.
· 4 min read

Fall is one of the best times to bring a big group to Topsail Island: September keeps summer-warm water at about 80 degrees, and October brings highs in the low 70s, quiet beaches and the best fishing of the year. At Topsail Paradise, October also starts free, self-serve pool heat and 3-night stays, so a long weekend for 22 is easy to plan.
I'm Dipen, and I host Topsail Paradise in North Topsail Beach, a house for up to 22 guests. If you asked me to pick one season for a family reunion or a friends' trip, I'd probably pick fall. Here's what September and October are like and how they work at the house.
What is the weather like in September and October?
Here are the long-term averages for North Topsail Beach from Climate-Data.org:
| Month | Avg high (F) | Avg low (F) | Avg ocean (F) |
|---|---|---|---|
| September | 80 | 70 | 80 |
| October | 73 | 61 | 74 |
| November | 64 | 51 | 67 |
September is the wettest month on average, so pack for a rainy afternoon. October tends to be the sweet spot: sweatshirt mornings, beach afternoons and cool evenings in the hot tub. Our weather by month guide covers the full year.
Fall is still hurricane season, which runs through November 30. We recommend travel insurance for stays from June through November; our hurricane season FAQ explains why.
How do September and October stays work at the house?
They work differently, so plan accordingly.
- September is still a summer week at our house: a 7-night minimum, Saturday to Saturday preferred. Pool heat isn't included in September, but the pool is usually warm from the weather early in the month.
- October switches to our off-season rules: a 3-night minimum with more flexible check-in days. A Friday-to-Monday weekend works, and so does a midweek stay.
From October 1 through May 15, pool heat is free and self-serve. You turn it on yourself with the steps in your guest guide; no request needed. Weather and wind affect the water temperature, so it's warm but not spa-hot. The 2 hot tubs on the first-floor wraparound deck are there for the cooler nights.
Why is fall great for fishing?
Because it's the season local anglers rank first. In September the mullet run starts and red drum push into the surf and inlet. By October it's peak season: red drum, speckled trout, black drum, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and kings off the pier ends. That's from our North Topsail Beach fishing guide, which also covers license rules and weekly reports.
Seaview Pier is about 3 miles from the house, and the town's 4x4 beach driving area at the north end is about 0.7 miles away.
What festivals happen in the fall?
Two local festivals bring people to the area. They're public festivals in nearby towns, not at the house, and neither had 2027 dates posted when I wrote this.
- Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival. In 2026 it ran September 25 and 26 at the Sneads Ferry Community Center, with a parade, live music, craft vendors and NC shrimp. That was its 55th year.
- Autumn with Topsail. The Autumn with Topsail Festival is held on the grounds of the Historical Society of Topsail Island and the Assembly Building in Topsail Beach, at the south end of the island. In 2026 it ran October 16 to 18 and was the 37th festival, with artists, food and beach music.
If either is a reason for your trip, check the official listing before you book, since dates move from year to year.
What's open in the fall, and what closes?
Most restaurants stay open, but fall is when hours start shifting. A few examples from what's posted now:
- The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center in Surf City lists no public tours in October.
- Daddy Mac's Beach Grille in Surf City takes large-group requests through its contact form from October to March, which helps with a group of 20.
- Some seasonal attractions close for the season in October.
Our things to do guide has a season-by-season list. My advice is to call ahead for anything you're counting on.
How does the house work for a fall group of 22?
Topsail Paradise sleeps 22 in 8 bedrooms and 6.5 baths. The bedroom layout shows how families usually split the rooms, and there's an outside elevator from the ground floor to the first and second floors.
- Cooking: a full kitchen, 2 charcoal grills and a ground-floor freezer. Fall is a great time for a shrimp boil; Mitchell Seafood in Sneads Ferry sells local shrimp.
- Evenings: the private saltwater pool with free heat from October 1, 2 hot tubs, and a coffee and wine bar nook.
- Practical: 2 washers and 2 dryers, a Level 2 EV charger, and a driveway for 6 to 8 cars.
The house is for overnight guests only, and pets aren't allowed. For beach runs there's an optional 6-seat golf cart add-on; see the golf cart page for pricing. Military families who book direct get it free.
When should we book a fall trip?
Pick your style first. For warm water and a full week, go with September; Labor Day week is covered in our Labor Day week guide. For a long weekend with free pool heat, October is the month.
Check the live calendar on our booking page. Booking direct saves 15%, and you'll see the full total before you pay.
